ISELMARPLEATS Behind the old sea dike of Gaast lies Iselmarpleats, a farmhouse dating from 1862 that has been completely renovated and made sustainable. This unique heritage property, with approximately 669 m² of living space, combines the charm of historic living in Friesland with all the comforts of today. From the outside, it is a classic farmhouse; from the inside, it is a light, contemporary living environment where living, working, and relaxing come together. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY The construction of the farmhouse in 1862 was a statement. The front of the house was covered with blue-glazed tiles, the barn with red tiles – subtle but clear signs of prosperity. For generations, the residents lived to the rhythm of agriculture and fishing. Gaast, small but influential, was known for its herring and anchovy catches, and even whaling left its mark here. The cobblestones with whale figures on the village square still remind us of that time. Today, Iselmarpleats is once again a model of progress. Architectural studio SKA reduced the structure to its essence: exposed trusses, smoothly plastered walls, residential concrete floors. The farmyard exudes the spirit of the Frisian farm, but with the clarity and tranquility of modern living. The kop-romp farmhouse is an icon of Friesland. Iselmarpleats shows how heritage can be given a new lease of life. The classic typology remained intact: living in the front house, working and living in the barn. But inside, an open living landscape was created in which tradition and modernity reinforce each other. The result is a house in which security and spaciousness come together, a place where every detail is just right.
